We recently received a shipment from one our favorite wineries, Madonna del Latte.
In a previous article I mentioned the wine festival we have in Foligno called Umbria in un Bicchiere ( Umbria in a glass). The event provides a platform fordozens of local wineries to share their wines with the public in a relaxed atmosphere. The first time we attended this event, we came across an outstanding producer, Madonna del Latte. We were struck by their Viognier, a variety that is extremely uncommon in Italy. We were also hooked. We enjoyed speakingwith Leon, the winemaker, about his various wines. We even convinced him to sell us a couple of bottles at the end of the night.
For our Anniversary last year, we finally made it to the winery! It is located in the countryside near Orvieto. We toured the beautiful property and then enjoyed an excellent wine tasting. The grounds are stunning, and we learneda lot about viniculture on this visit.
We were able to taste a number of wines out on the patio on a beautiful late summer day. While the Viognier remains one of our favorites, we also love the Rosaria, their sparkling Rosé. We like it as an aperitvo or with a light dinner. Their Orvieto Classico was also a nice surprise – very crisp and bright. Not at all flabby or boring like a lot of Orviettos.
The red wines are also excellent. We often bring the Sucano when weare invited to visit friends. Everyone who has tired it has been impressed with this wine’s elegance and perfect balance. It is dry but goes with a variety of foods.
We recently opened a bottle of their Monte Landro, an extraordinary Syrah. We enjoyed it with pasta and a sauce made with cingialle (wild boar). The aroma itself is intoxicating. It is woody, and fruit forward, but not jammy.
Madonna del Latte delivers, and they have a wine club. We chose the option that ships four times per year. Check them out, and if you are in the area, schedule a visit to the cantina. You won’t be disappointed!
